School-Based Occupational Therapist Career

Being an Occupational Therapist in the school setting is an extremely rewarding career. Using your imagination and critical thinking skills, you will have the opportunity to create interactive therapy sessions for students. Occupational Therapists have a wide knowledge base to assist students with impairments in accessing their education and being successful in the school setting. Additionally, schools utilize a team-based approach to help students with complex educational needs. The team brings together the skills and expertise of multiple professionals to plan and manage the unique needs of the students. Over time, you will see students begin to use what they have learned from you as they implement these skills into their daily lives. The school-based setting is ideal for people who are really looking to make a long-term difference in the lives of their students.

Working in the school setting provides more flexibility than a traditional clinic, nursing home, or hospital setting. A school-based calendar typically runs on 7.5-hour days for only 10 months out of the year. While some of our team members work full-time contract positions, others are looking for more flexibility in their schedules. For these individuals, IEP Therapy has opportunities for part-time contract work as well. These part-time positions are the perfect fit for OTs who are looking to work in multiple settings. Our team members enjoy having all major holidays off work, as well as fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks. Although IEP Therapy only contracts with schools, some of our therapists supplement with PRN work in a couple different settings over the summer or through extended vacation breaks.
